Resources for Citing in MLA or APA

The official document to citing in APA format is the 7th edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association

There are many copies of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 6th edition available in the libraries.

In addition to using the official publication manuals to format your citations, you can also use free online citation generators. Many of the library databases also have a citation feature that will generate a citation in many formats, including APA.

You should always double-check citations you generate from an online website or from the database. Make sure all the information in the citation matches your source, and that the citation is capitalized, formatted, and punctuated correctly. You are responsible for making sure citations are correct.

Here are a few citation guides and citation generators we like:

  • KnightCite - from the the Hekman Library at Calvin College
  • Purdue OWL - a detailed resource for help citing in APA

Finally, the EBSCO databases (inlcuding CINAHL, MEDLINE, and Health Source) will formulate citations for the articles you find there. There are a few ways to get a citation from the EBSCO databases.

Whenever you click on an article title in your results list, you will see a Tools menu on the right hand side of your screen.

If you email yourself an article, you'll have the option to include a citation. Select the Citation Format bubble, and choose APA  from the drop-down box. When you receive the email with the article, the citation will be in the body of the email.

You can also select 'Cite' from the Tools menu, and a window will open on screen with several different citation style formats for that article. You can copy and paste the APA citation from this screen:
