Informative and Persuasive Speeches

You must use a minimum of three different types of sources for your informative and persuasive speeches, so you will have to search a few different places to find all your sources:

  • A good place to start for the informative speech is Academic Search Complete, the library's biggest and most comprehensive database. If you're looking for articles to help inform yourself about a topic, it's a good bet you'll find it here. Use the Academic Search Complete tab in this guide for tips on using it and the other EBSCO databases (check the page with directions for searching more than one database at the same time).
  • For the persuasive speech, two of the library databases that are particularly helpful for providing both sides of a controversial topic are Issues & Controversies and Opposing Viewpoints. There is a tab with directions for using each database in this guide.

If you decide to do a Google search to find web resources on your topic, make sure to incorporate some of the tips on the Advanced Google Searching tab to make the most out of your Google search.

Critical Analysis Paper

You must use a minimum of two sources for your critical analysis paper in order to analyze a speech and provide information about the speaker and the historical context of the speech.

While you can use the Academic Search Complete database for this information, there is lots of good information available on the web, too.

Use the Key Public Speeches tab to find librarian-approved websites with information on Mary Fisher, Lyndon B. Johnson, John F. Kennedy, and President Obama. Or use the directions for Advanced Google searching to search for web sources on your own.
