Why should you use books?

Most scholarly content is not found on the general Internet and if it is, it's often behind a paywall. Even the articles found through the free library databases have a drawback: they're written by researchers for researchers. Here are some good reasons to use books in your research instead of heading for the Google search:

  • Big Picture: Books can give you a detailed analysis of a topic touching on many sides of an issue
  • Accessibility: They will provide background information and explain basic concepts and terms
  • Great Start:You can use the bibliographies in books to find other sources, making them a great jumping off point

If you need to do some serious research, books are often a great choice!

How Do I Find My Book on the Shelf?

The books in all three San Jacinto College Libraries are shelved in order using the Library of Congress Classification System. Every book has a call number. The call number is a combination of letters and numbers. Books on the same topic have similar call numbers and are grouped together. The call number will usually be found on the spine of the book, but may also be found on the lower left-hand corner of the front cover. Here is an example of a call number:

GV
944.5
L64
2001

Tips:
  • Read the call number line by line, starting at the top.
  • Books are shelved according to the letters (GV in the example above), then the numbers that follow.
  • If the line has a letter-number combination (L64 in the example above), read the letter first then the number.

The shelf below illustrates how books are arranged on the shelf:

Renewing Your Books

You can access your library account online in order to renew books by opening the library catalog and clicking "Login" on the top right.

Enter your name and G number.

Once you've logged in, you can see your library record, select the books you want to renew from the list and click "Renew Marked." To renew all of your books, click "Renew All" :

Click YES to confirm your request and you will see a confirmation of your successful renewal and the new due date for your book:

You may receive a message that says "Renewal Failed. Please see library staff member for assistance." Your renewal might not be allowed because someone else has placed a request for the book, the book has been renewed too many times (each book can only be renewed once), or your account is set to expire before the new due date. Contact a librarian for help.
