MLA Citation Style

What is a citation?

Have you ever asked yourself (or someone else), why you need to cite or what a citation is? Well, check out this site from the creators of Turnitin and other plagarism prevention technologies to answer that question.

Does MLA sound familiar? If it does it is probably because you have used the
Modern Language Association (MLA) citation style to cite sources used for some of your classes. The MLA has a set of guidelines that shows you how to cite almost any source you can think of.

The databases are primarily for articles, so most of these citations will have the same format but with citation information for that particular article. The Read, Print, Save, E-mail, and Cite Articles tab shows you how to retrieve the article citation. Because automatically generated citations, can sometimes be incorrect, there are a couple of ways you can double check the citation to ensure that it is correct. And if it is not correct, you can always make the necessary corrections by using the sources below:

MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers 7th ed.

This is the official handbook published by the Modern Language Association that provides all the rules on citing in the MLA citation style. It addresses everything from punctuation and formatting your paper, to preparing your list of works cited and doing in text citations.

There is a copy at the reference desk at each campus. There is also a copy on reserve at each campus.

Purdue OWL

Purdue's Online Writing Lab is a well-known and very useful website that provides examples and sample papers using MLA style.

Citation Builder Sites

These sites are citation generators.  They will create a citation for you:

You should always double-check any of the citations that are made for you.  Never just blindly copy and paste a citation assuming it is correct.

Citation Guides

Citing sources can be difficult.  Use these guides to help you.

Notecards can be used to keep track of sources and how you will use them.
