Useful Titles in Your Library | Quelques titres utiles à la bibliothèque

Your library offers many useful titles to help you with your French homework, or just to practice and improve your vocabulary and skills.  Click on the linked title to find more information about the title from the San Jac Libraries Online Catalogue.

How to Use the Catalog

You can get into the library catalog using the links on the left, or click here. The homepage of the catalog looks like this:

You can search for a book if you know its title, author, ISBN, or call number by changing the first drop-down menu. Or you can leave the drop-down on 'Keyword' and perform a keyword search.

Using the second drop-down box, you can choose which library location you'd like to search. Or you can leave the menu on "View Entire Collection" to find books at North, Central, and South. You can request books to be sent from one campus to another (see the Request a Book tab).

The most common type of search is a keyword search. Enter a phrase like "childhood obesity" or "global waming." If you have more than one keyword, connect the keywords with the word 'and.' So if I wanted to search for books about the death penalty in Texas, I might type the following:

After you've entered your keywords, click Search. You can check the checkbox for "Limit search to available items" if you only want to find results that are available for check out. The results page for your search looks like this:

Call Number

The books in all three San Jacinto College Libraries are shelved in order using the Library of Congress Classification System. Every book has a call number. The call number is a combination of letters and numbers. Books on the same topic have similar call numbers and are grouped together. The call number will usually be found on the spine of the book, but may also be found on the lower left-hand corner of the front cover.

Here is an example of a call number:

GV
944.5
L64
2001

Tips:
  • Read the call number line by line, starting at the top.
  • Books are shelved according to the letters (GV in the example above), then the numbers that follow.
  • If the line has a letter-number combination (L64 in the example above), read the letter first then the number.

The shelf below illustrates how books are arranged on the shelf.

You can renew books online!

You can access your library account online in order to renew books by opening the library catalog and clicking "Login" on the top right.

Enter your name and G number.

Once you've logged in, you can see your library record, select the books you want to renew from the list and click "Renew Marked." To renew all of your books, click "Renew All" :

Click YES to confirm your request and you will see a confirmation of your successful renewal and the new due date for your book:

You may receive a message that says "Renewal Failed. Please see library staff member for assistance." Your renewal might not be allowed because someone else has placed a request for the book, the book has been renewed too many times (each book can only be renewed once), or your account is set to expire before the new due date. Contact a librarian for help.
