QEP - Thinking and Beyond

Foundation for Critical Thinking Framework

The FCT framework has an extensive website (www.criticalthinking.org) containing numerous resources and professional development materials.

The FCT framework has three primary components:

  • The elements of thought (reasoning),

  • The intellectual standards that should be applied to the elements of thought, and

  • The intellectual traits associated with a cultivated critical thinker that result from the consistent and disciplined application of the intellectual standards to the elements of thought.

The San Jacinto College QEP Team tailored this framework’s diagram to the vision of the College and needs of our students by creating a cyclical (instead of hierarchical) diagram. A more fluid model allows flexibility for students and professors. This recursive framework also allows for more elasticity when attempting to design critical thinking assignments and activities that will be applicable across the curriculum.
